I grew up on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, where my love of exploring living things in the outdoors was born. I was in the Boy Scouts, where I became an Eagle Scout (as well as spending a lot of time tromping through the woods). I also enjoyed fishing, reading, and being in the marching and concert bands at my high school. I entered college at the University of Alabama as a "pre-med" biology major, but quickly decided that becoming a doctor was not my plan. Instead, I studied evolutionary biology, ecology, and psychology, which eventually led me to an interest in studying animal behavior. While in college, I was a member of the University of Alabama "Million Dollar" Band, as well as performing in my hometown of Mobile as a member of Blow House, a New Orleans-style brass band that performs in local Mardi Gras parades. After graduating from UA, I moved to Bowling Green State University in Ohio to pursue my Master's Degree, studying the sensory biology of the fish lateral line system. While working as a teaching assistant and at the on-campus tutoring center, and as a substitute teacher, I decided that teaching was my calling. I started teaching at Garinger High School in August of 2014. At Garinger, I primarily taught Honors Forensic Science and Honors Anatomy & Physiology, as well as other science classes as needed. In the Fall of 2018, I moved to Mallard Creek High School to teach PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems. |
